Diagnosis and Quantitative Assessment of Mandibular Asymmetry Using Cbct Image Volumes
نویسنده
چکیده
Objective: To determine if 3D shape correspondence can accurately quantify mandibularasymmetry in surgical patients. Methods: Pretreatment cone-Beam CT scans were acquiredof twenty orthognathic surgery patients with different degrees and types of facial asymmetry. The maxillofacial hard tissues were segmented and mirroring was performed for virtualsurgical planning using the CranioMaxilloFacial Application software. Mirrored surgicalmodels were superimposed on the actual patient models using two different approaches: (1)mirroring on the midsagittal plane; and (2) mirroring on an arbitrary plane with registrationon the cranial base. Different amounts of additional mandibular asymmetry in the threeplanes of space were simulated by known amounts. For both mirroring methods, SPHARMshape correspondence was used to detect and quantify simulated asymmetries. ResultsSPHARM-shape correspondence accurately quantified different types and degrees ofvirtually simulated facial asymmetry. The probabilities for all 6 degrees of freedom ( rotationand translation) that the difference between asymmetry measurements and the known virtually simulated value is less than 0.5mm was very good for both mirroring techniques

Assessment of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Findings in Facial Asymmetric Patients
Introduction: Due to the complexity of facial asy-mmetry, the diagnosis of different aspects of asymmetry via conventional radiographs is not precise. In this study, we investigated findings of facial asymmetry by using cone- beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, we evaluated CBCT findings of 18 patients i.e. a group of 14 females and 4 males ...
متن کاملApplicability of CBCT as a Substitute for the Gold-Standard Tooth Clearing Technique for Identification of Internal Anatomical Variations of Mandibular Incisors
Background and Aim: Knowledge about the root canal system variations is crucial for successful endodontic treatment. This study aimed to examine the applicability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a substitute for the gold-standard tooth clearing technique in identification of internal anatomical variations of mandibular incisors. Materials and Methods: This in-vitro study evaluated 6...
متن کاملThe Impact of Residual Geometric Inaccuracies on Normal Organ Doses in Image Guided-Radiation Therapy of Prostate Cancer Using On-Board Kilovoltage Cone-Beam Computed Tomography
Introduction: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the variations in delivered dose to the bladder, rectum, and femoral heads of prostate cancer patients during a course of treatment by image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Materials and Methods: Overall, 15 patients with prostate cancer were selected and. Each week, for each patient five consecutive cone beam computed tomograph...
متن کاملComparison of Mesiodistal Root Angulation Measured from Conventional and CBCT Derived Panoramic Radiographs in Orthodontic Patients
INTRODUCTION Use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in orthodontics is increasing; however, some patients started treatment with conventional images. The objective of this study is to manipulate CBCT panoramic reconstruction to make it comparable to conventional panoramic image and to compare mesiodistal root angulations on both images. MATERIALS AND METHODS Concurrent conventional panor...
متن کاملThe genial tubercle: A prospective novel landmark for the diagnosis of mandibular asymmetry
INTRODUCTION Identifying menton (Me) on posteroanterior cephalograms and three-dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images is difficult, because the midpoint of the symphyseal area is not identifiable after the mandibular symphysis fuses at an early age. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of the identification of the genial tubercle (GT) in patients with mand...
